Blood Clots Can Be the Result of Medical Malpractice
One of the most serious risks to surgery is the formation of blood clots, also called pulmonary embolisms. A blood clot can form in one part of the body — for example when blood pools in the legs — and can then travel to the lungs, causing chest pain, difficulty breathing, and even death.
There are a number of risk factors associated with the development of pulmonary embolisms, including length of time the patient is in surgery (2 hours or more), medical conditions such as obesity, and older age of the patient.
The standard of care doctors use to prevent pulmonary embolisms includes:
- The use of an inflatable leg sleeve to keep blood moving in the legs
- The use of tight stockings (T.E.D. Stockings) to keep blood from pooling in the legs
- The use of anti-coagulants (blood thinners) such as Coumadin or Lovenox
Was Your Loved One’s Pulmonary Embolism the Result of Medical Malpractice?
If a doctor fails to take appropriate precautions and a patient develops a pulmonary embolism, it is a sign of medical negligence. If a patient comes to the emergency room complaining of chest pain, lung pain or breathing difficulties after a recent surgery and a doctor fails to consider the possibility of a pulmonary embolism, that may also be medical malpractice. The tragic reality is that too often patients die when they are sent home with a misdiagnosis.
Identifying medical malpractice may require the use of medical experts who understand both the medical condition and the standard of care the doctor should have met. We are one of the largest, most established medical malpractice and personal injury law firms in Ohio.
